Outer Banks Barbecue
October 5th, 2012Last week we took a family vacation on the OBX, a thin ridge of left-over sand dunes off the east coast. It was so much fun relaxing and playing in the beach environment. Flip flops, “strangely” colored buildings, grit in your teeth, sea gulls, hanging out in the pool, eating crab cakes, swimming in the ocean, and playing in God’s big sandbox.
Another highlight was cooking some good food at the house. (As well as solidifying my hatred for lighter fluid and falling more in love with my electric charcoal lighter. 😎 ) I cooked a couple pans of Cheesy Squealin’s, a meatloaf, and two sausage fatties.
One morning my wife and I took a beach walk to enjoy the sunrise together. The walk—uh, I mean the sunrise, was just stunning. (Short video clip at the bottom of this post.)
The Currituck Lighthouse was just up the road from our house. The view from the top was amazing.
The evening we arrived, we ate at Miller’s Waterfront Restaurant. I love meat that used to lived in or by the water. 🙂
We had a covered grill to work with. Yay! Right by the pool in a beautiful setting.
One morning I smoked fatties on the grill for breakfast. They were loaded with peppers, onions, and cheese. Delicious!
Fun at the beach.
One day we went to see the big sand dunes.
I also cooked jalapeno poppers, or Cheesy Squealin’s as I like to call them.
What beats a good smoked meatloaf?
And you can’t have vacation without grilling some good ole’ burgers and dogs.
And as promised, here’s 25 seconds of beach bliss. I made it on my phone, so it’s a little shaky.
What have you been cooking on your sand dune (AKA neck of the woods)?
Have fun,
Lavern

Enjoyed browsing thru ur vacation pics. You really ought to try some NY hotdogs. Those dogs u had on the grill didn’t look too inviting. Sahlen’s, Nathan’s, Zweigle’s, & Wardynski’s hotdogs are a few that come to mind! Most are sold at Sport’s venues in the East. Do yourself a favor and check some out. Happy grillin’!

Thanks for your suggestions. I haven’t seen those kinds. Sometimes we get the John F. Martin brand out of PA and those are really good. Nonetheless, these were cheese filled and delicious too.

I just came back from the outter banks, NC last week. My family has a beach house there.
Did some BBQ on the Red Drum that I caught and a few Bluefish on the grill.Didn’t bother with the meat just sea food. Larry
