A Trip to Famous Dave’s
January 29th, 2013I’ve known of Famous Dave’s Barbecue and even met Dave himself a few years ago at the National Barbecue Conference in Memphis. But for some reason, I had never gotten around to eating at one—until a few weeks ago.
My in-laws were here for a few days over Christmas, and one day the ladies all went shopping in Chattanooga. The rest of us decided to make it a good day too. First we headed to Best Buy and took care of some tech shopping, then on to Famous Dave’s for an unforgettable experience.
The decor inside the restaurant was very fitting for a barbecue joint. Stuff like trolling motors and humorous signs hung all around the dining area and a fire place with a live fire really added a nice touch. (I wish I would have taken more pictures for you.)
The menu was beautiful as you can tell in the picture above. Those ribs jumped off the page and stole my heart, so that’s what I ended up with. 🙂 I also had beans and fries and cornbread. The ribs were outstanding. Dave’s goal was to make the best ribs in America, and I think he just might have achieved his goal! Ribs are my favorite and I don’t like them falling off the bone or bouncing around on the bone. As far as doneness goes, these were within the range of perfection.
The fries were not surprising, but very satisfactory. I do like the unusual shape they are cut in.
The beans were amazing. Instead of boring baked beans in a sauce, they were mixed with pieces of bacon, pulled pork, and sausage of some sort. I think I also tasted some crunchy onion pieces. I’ve never had beans quite this amazing since the day of my birth.
The cornbread was completely astounding. Period. I am actually considering an hour’s drive to Famous Dave’s to get more of this cornbread. It was very soft and moist, but the top of the muffin was a bit chewy and very buttery. Oh, man! Totally incredible. I am very fond of cornbread and can appreciate it even when it’s cold, over-baked, and dry. This stuff was completely off the charts.
These pictures are not great, but I only had my phone with me. Plus the cornbread didn’t arrive until later. But oh well, what justice can a picture do to Famous Dave’s famous barbecue?
Sam ordered a bacon burger sandwich of some sort. (I forget its name.) It stood tall and was made of a 1/2 pound burger, bacon, pulled pork, and the toppings. But I do know of a truth that sandwich was one delicious-looking hunk of meat.
In summary, our time at the Famous Dave restaurant in Chattanooga went smoothly. No catastrophes or majorly embarrassing moments for the duration of the visit. It was a family friendly place with a great culture and outstanding barbecue, even if I had to ask for my cornbread. (Good thing I did!)
Now, go search out the closest Famous Dave’s and storm the gates.
Have fun,
Lavern
